What an interesting question. I am asking you, the one reading this, if you feel you can succeed in a home based business. I had often heard network marketing being described as a cult. But after spending some time in the mlm industry, I can see why. Here is a little story.
My very first prospect in mlm was my friend Kurt. Kurt was a hotel worker who hated his job and wanted a way out. So, I invited him to an open meeting to see the plan.
During the meeting Kurt became excited and was interested in joining my downline. He was even thinking of others who he thought would also be interested. He was sold to the idea of network marketing and wanted to know where to sign up. Unfortunately, this is where things went wrong.
After the meeting, Kurt was approached by another network marketer who began proclaiming that our mlm business was sent to us by god. He went further by saying that it is our godly duty to go out there and share the mlm opportunity with others. I could sense that this was a bad move.
My friend started to show signs of doubt. He had loss some of his enthusiasm and was second guessing himself. I had to quickly find a way to reassure him, so, I decided to take him to my upline (Dave) the following night.
Dave was glad to meet Kurt. He immediately took him to a separate room to do the follow-up while I waited outside. About 15 minutes later, both men returned.
Kurt looked totally freaked out. His eyes were red and he was sweating. He wanted to leave immediately. I asked for an explanation and he responded by saying that this thing is a cult and I should get out of it before it is too late.
My friend never spoke to me again until a few months had passed. It was here that he told me what had happened. My upline was using scriptures from the bible to convince Kurt that god really did provide us with network marketing. This was a learning experience for me.
Now do not get me wrong. I do believe in god. But I think it is wrong to use god to make prospects join your mlm business. Telling others that mlm is sent by god and we have a heavenly duty as network marketers is more superstition than salvation.
You guessed right if you concluded that the relationship between my upline and me has weakened. I no longer trusted him to do follow-ups with my leads. I simply do not believe in scaring people into network marketing and expect mlm success.
I later learned that mlm success comes from being professional. The key is learning how to have prospects coming to you rather than cold calling or going through the telephone directory.
Think about it. What would you think if a stranger called your home and says he has a god given method of making money? Would you think it is a cult or scam?
The truth is network marketing is not a religion. Avoid those who will make it seem this way. Remember the key to mlm success is to find new strategies that are effective.
As a Network Marketer, you will be competing with hundreds, if not thousand of other distributors. Keep your downlines and customers happy by offering professional customer service.
1. When you make your first Network Marketing sale, follow-up with the customer. You could write a simple “thank you” email and include an advertisement for other products that may benefit the consumer. You should follow-up every few months to check if there are any new needs the customer has.
2. You could inform your customers of other similar products that may complement the current Network Marketing product of interest. When the customer is at the order page, let them know of a few extra related products you have for sale. They could just add it to their original order.
3. Let your customers know of any benefits they could receive if they refer four customers to your Network Marketing web site, for example, they could receive a full rebate of their purchase price. By allowing 1 customer to benefit, this will turn one sale into three sales, simply by referrals and word of mouth sales.
4. When you sell a product, give your customers the option of joining your Network Marketing program so they can make commissions selling your product. This will allow you to leverage on their contacts and multiply the sale you just made.
5. Sell the reprint/reproduction rights to your advertising products for your Network Marketing business opportunity. You could include an ad on or with the product for other products you sell. You could make sales for the reproduction rights and sales on the back end product.
6. You could cross promote your product with other businesses’ products in a package deal. By doing joint ventures, you can expose your network marketing products and service to customers you otherwise would never have know. Do this by including an ad or flyer for the MLM product you sell and have other businesses sell it for you.
7. When you ship out or deliver your product, include a coupon for other related products you sell in the package. This will attract them to buy more products from you and bring repeat sales to your Network Marketing business.
8. Send your customers a catalog of add-on products for the original product they purchased. This could be upgrades, special services, attachments, etc. If they enjoy your product they will buy the extra add-ons.
9. Sell gift certificates for your products to your customers. One way to do this is to inform the customer of a scheduled price increase and a gift certificate is a way to lock down the price. You’ll make sales from the purchase of the gift certificate, when the recipient cashes it in. They could also buy other items from your web site.
10. Send your customers free sample products with their product package. The freebies should have your MLM Company’s name printed on them. It could be bumper stickers, ball caps, t-shirts etc. This will expose other people to your MLM company and business opportunity.
So you decided to become a network marketer- but how did this whole networking home business thing get started?
When we understand what has happened in the past in reference to the history of network marketing we can better understand the industry today. This helps us in how we approach our business.
There were some network marketing companies around before the 1960′s, but in the 60′s is when network marketing really took off and made many people wealthy. Network marketing first got momentum when a certain company realized that if they would pay their product users to sell their products to their friends and family members they could move 3 and 4 times more product. You know the company I am referring to by several different names today. I won’t mention their name as it often evokes just that image of a friend trying to sell the program to a friend or family member for financial gain.
The definition of selling is, trying to create the need to buy, in some one else. What I propose is to
market your product or service. The definition of marketing is, finding the person that already has the want or need for what your product or service provides and you meeting that need.
This company promoted the book “The American Dream” and their concept worked, because people had more spendable income than ever before in our country’s history.
This company had the brilliant idea of a compensation plan that would actually pay people to use the products that they used every day anyway. People just got some of their friends and family members to buy from them instead of buying from the local Mom and Pop store. People could make big money doing that. This company was responsible for more millionaires than any other company in the history of the U.S. That’s where making the list of friends and family got it’s start. Remember the circles. These techniques and methods are still taught today in various ways.
Today these methods just do not work well anymore in network marketing. People are not community minded like they were 45 years ago. Today, with the Internet and microwave lifestyle, we are lucky if we know even 2 or 3 families in our housing addition or neighborhood. Let alone enough to build a network marketing business.
There are some people today that can still make these “old time” methods work. However, even if you do have a huge warm market, most people get offended when their friends and family members try to “recruit” them into their business, which is tooted as,“the business that will makes us all rich.” Most of the time they will perceive your attempt to enroll them as that of trying to leverage a personal relationship for financial gain. At best, it’s a tough sell, and at worst, it can ruin relationships. I’ve seen it happen time and again
There are other, much better ways to grow your down line. How about learning how to find those people that have a want or need for what you have (before you call them). Interesting, Huh.
